On November 13, 1909, Cherry, Illinois was the scene of a mining disaster that took the lives of 259 miners. As a result, the Illinois legislature passed the Workers' Compensation Act. Today, in the cemetery at the south end of town, a sculpture of a weeping lady mourns the loss. 2009 marks the 100th anniversary and special events are planned.
