Walnut was incorporated in 1872, and quickly grew into a bustling, thriving progressive community.

A variety of businesses

It boasts of having the first mutual telephone company in Bureau County, organized in 1891. In 1968, according to the book, Big Bureau and Bright Prairies, Walnut had 102 businesses. Walnut continues to build a variety of businesses and services. Insurance needs are met by Read Insurance and Country Companies. Fisch Motors is a great place to buy a new car or have your current one serviced. Building or remodeling needs are handled by V&C Construction and Walnut Manor is the place for retirement or special care needs. The Walnut Café is a great place to grab a meal with daily specials in more than amply portions!

Walnut Cheese and Avanti Foods offers a variety of gifts, as well as delectable cheeses and gourmet foods. They also are purveyors of fine pizza (Gino's). Avanti has a store where you can stock up not only on their fine product but also imported cheeses, too. One can also view the cheese making process in the plant area from the store. While in Walnut, enjoy the shops on Main Street such as the Walnut House with their Don Marquis exhibit and numerous aisles to browse for something different. Shop owner Adrian is just about the nicest and most helpful person around. She has developed a steady clientele who return with friends to shop and meet her.

Local celebrations

Walnut's Fourth of July Summer Celebration is an event that is well attended and one that past residents of Walnut schedule their vacations around.  The fireworks display is a big part of the four-day celebration, one that will not be forgotten, and is acclaimed to be the best in Bureau County.

Other annual events in Walnut are the Farm Toy Show scheduled in March, and the Spring and Fall town-wide garage sales, as well as Park District scheduled sporting events. The all girl American Softball Association Competitions are in June. The Annual Antique Appraisal Show is in September. Walnut is proud of its many churches that will provide you with a place to worship and meet new friends. Walnut also prides itself on its excellent educational system. Add an outstanding library, a beautiful park district that has a variety of scheduled events throughout the year to enjoy, and you have a community that exceeds expectations.
